In its more than 70 years of history, Výskumný ústav dopravný, a. s. (Transport Research Institute) has been dealing with important assignments of national significance with economic impact, resulting from major research projects in the field of creation and implementation of transport policy. The related extensive know-how integrates VUD into the scientific and research basis of the Slovak Republic, which has been considered one of the most important priorities of the company strategy.

In 2002, the Institute has transformed to a private joint stock company, with no substantial changes in the structure and competence of the company. Výskumný ústav dopravný, a.s. has three divisions providing its portfolio of activities:

• D2 – Division of Certification, Testing and Interoperability
• D3 – Division of Economy and Operation

Based on the past experience in domestic and foreign markets, Transport Research Institute represents an organization of science, research and development with a long tradition and research potential in the field of transport. VUD is also experienced in the development of strategic documents, working with national and international authorities in the field of traffic engineering and transport planning. The company has rich experience in implementing intelligent transport projects related to the solution, optimization and development of the toll system and the development of intelligent on-board units. During many years of its activity, the Institute has gained experience in many projects of national and international importance. VUD scope of competence covers all transport modes, mainly in the field of engineering and technology, operation, economy, legislation, transport management and organisation, informatics and automation, environment, energy systems, transport safety and quality, infrastructure, transport services and tourism management, transport policy, certification and testing in the field of construction products, special products and interoperability.

Transport Research Institute within its personnel policy pursues clear objectives in the area of its own knowledge and scientific development and seeks to guarantee the quality of the services provided through its employees and co-workers, taking into account current and planned needs in the field of scientific and technological development and international trends. The experience and knowledge of the team are constantly being expanded through the cooperation with local and foreign partners from the academic, research and industrial field, participation in professional conferences, trainings and, last but not least, through own research aimed at new knowledge and applications in business practice. Particular emphasis is put on the own knowledge progress and the creation of conditions for the activation of young researchers in it ranks.

Transport Research Institute is an institution representing the market standard in its field of expertise and specialization in the area of planning and conceptual design of transport systems. The goal of the research institution is to integrate innovative elements and services in the solutions of transport problems in order to increase the knowledge level while ensuring the readiness of the transport systems for the arrival of SmartCities and SafeCities systems in order to develop the intelligent transport and intelligent transport systems not only in the Slovak Republic, but with the international reach as well.
